Shropshire Youth Folk Ensemble

The Shropshire Youth Folk Ensemble has been created as part of All Together Now.

We know there are many young people out there who would like to learn more about playing folk music collectively, and so, working in conjunction with the Shropshire Music Service, we’ve helped to launch and fund the Ensemble.

The SYFE is a non-auditioning performance ensemble for young people aged 10 – 18yrs; any instruments are welcome, but acoustic instruments would be preferred. The music is taught largely by ear, using traditional methods; notation is also available from the tunebook page on the left. No grades are necessary, but you should be able to play a folk tune; if you’re unsure, have a go at the tunes in the tunebook on the SYFE website.

They’ve already performed at Shrewsbury Folk Festival and opened for Belshazzar’s Feast at their Christmas concert at Morris Hall, Shrewsbury, in 2015.

The Demon Barbers workshop weekend

The SYFE had a visit from the Demon Barbers in October 2016. The Demon Barbers delivered a weekend workshop teaching the young musicians new music and dance skills and exploring different genres that they may not have experienced before! Watch a short snapshot of what went on in the video below:
